After completeing this lesson I was elated. I had some anxiety prior to appraoching the lesson. I had to change my orignal idea to teach this lesson over three or four days and break the class up into two groups of ten studnets to do the assessment and studnet work. What happened is that I condensed the original lesson into a time block of 25-35 minutes which is normal used for a literacy block (readers/writers workshop) and I used the whole class and I deceided to partner them up into teams of two. They were instructed to share with each other and I used observations and whole group sharing to assess students.
If I had the opportunity to do it again I would stick to my original plan of teaching this lesson over three or four days so that I could introduce each part of the lessons as a separate concept then have the students connect each concept together at the end of the week to create a final project. Since the lesson was condensed I think that some other students missed the concept. I would have had more opportunities to provide scaffolding for other students. Also I think that we could have gotten more creative with costumes and movement had we had more time for developing the concept over the three or four days.
I did enjoy teaching the lesson and exposing the students to the idea of creating new stories by changing something in a story that you already know. I think it wll provide background for studnets when they develop stories in another grade.
